Call for condemnation – Letter from 23 EU-MEPs to Kaja Kallas 05-05-2025

Strasbourg, May 5, 2025
To the attention of
Executive Vice-President Kaja Kallas

Subject: Drone attack on international waters of European humanitarian workers

Dear Executive Vice-President,
It is with deep sorrow we learn of Israel’s unjustified attack to the Freedom Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. Drones carried the attack, which took place in international waters close to Malta, an EU Member State, thousands of kilometres from Gaza, the destination of the vessel. This is yet again another unlawful action and a serious crime committed by the State of Israel. A State that operates with impunity in the eyes of the world.

After this severe attack, perpetrated nearby an EU Member State, the European Union and its Member States must take a stand, and speak out immediately to condemn and react to a crime that erodes the very existence purpose of the European project, peace.

We demand that the European Union take action on this issue, we demand that international waters must be respect, and above all, we demand to stop the genocide in Gaza. The European Union must respond and denounce the ongoing impunity of genocide in Gaza.

The MEPs signatories of this letter demand you as Executive Vice-President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to speak out to condemn this attack on humanitarian aid workers, activists and EU citizens and to mediate with Maltese authorities to fulfil its obligations under international maritime law to protect a civilian ship in distress.
