Rosa Martinez (United States)

I’m a writer, student, and film programmer living in New York City. I refrain from saying I’m an “activist,” for that isn’t any sort of special designation—I engage in political work because I have to.

As the child of Colombian immigrants, and the grandchild of one of Latin America’s most famed militants, I was instilled with a revolutionary gaze at a young age. In New York, most of my organizing work revolves around educating others about the history and importance of resistance movements, specifically those in Palestine. This is best exemplified in my film programming, as I host screenings and discussions that find historical intersections between a litany of national liberation movements.

I am both honored and humbled to be a part of this year’s mission to Gaza. Being on a flotilla is something I’ve dreamed of doing since I was a teenager, and I have finally been bestowed the divine timing that makes my participation possible. I take solace in knowing that, as much as my family and friends might worry, they are both proud and happy—for they know I am right where I’m supposed to be.
